Both stainless steel and mild steel are used in a host of steel fabrication projects, but their alloying materials make them different. The alloy in mild steel is carbon, while the alloy in stainless steel is chromium. The differences in alloy materials result in internal structural property changes that impact each material. The chromium in stainless steel is responsible for giving it its name, as it has a high corrosion resistance which results in a material that doesn’t tarnish or stain.
Yes! Although it may be a more difficult material to weld, it is still entirely possible with the right equipment and knowledge. As long as the right filler material is used during the welding process, stainless steel welding is completely possible. MIG welding, or gas metal arc welding, is typically the most successful type of welding for stainless steel materials. We use a shielding gas to further protect the workpiece from contamination during this process.
Both 304 and 316 stainless steel are commonly used in stainless steel fabrication. However, the 304 alloy has a higher melting point. Despite this, 316 stainless steel has better resistance to chemicals and chlorides such as salt than 304 stainless steel does, making it an overall higher-quality option in most circumstances.
The cost of stainless steel fabrication depends on the size and thickness of materials required for the project. Stainless steel metal fabrication typically costs anywhere from $1,200 to $1,500 per ton of material. Custom designs may cost anywhere up to $2,500 per ton.
