The Client
The story of Aramark began in 1936, when Davre Davidson placed a series of peanut vending machines around Los Angeles, re-stocking them out of the trunk of his Dodge. Meanwhile, another young entrepreneur, Bill Fishman, was setting up his own vending machine company in the Chicago area.
Over the next 20 years, both vending companies grew and expanded and in 1959, joined together to form Automatic Retailers of America (ARA). Two years later, ARA moved its headquarters from Los Angeles to Philadelphia when it acquired Philly-based food services company, Slater Inc.
From these humble beginnings, the company enjoyed exponential expansion and over the decades, evolved into a global food services and hospitality powerhouse. Its name also evolved, with ARA becoming ARA Services in 1969 and Aramark in 1994.
Today, Aramark proudly serves the world’s leading educational institutions, Fortune 500 companies, world champion sports teams (its Olympic tradition began when it was awarded the food services contract for the summer games in Mexico, 1968), prominent healthcare providers, iconic destinations and cultural attractions with food and facilities management.
The Challenge
Aramark’s food services team based out of Phoenix, AZ, came to Schaumburg with a request for 20 stainless steel racks. These racks would be used to transport plated food from a commissary location to the warehouse where its partner American Airlines organizes and packs its airline catering carts.
The company required a specific solution that ensured that the food was transported safely and securely to its destination, a solution that prevented the ready-prepared dishes of food sliding around or worse, falling off the rack and being dropped and wasted.
It also needed to ensure that the efficiency and productivity of its operations was consistent and that employees were able to easily maneuver the racks between commissary and warehouse. And finally, Aramark needed the racks to be delivered in a very tight timeframe.
Of course, the Schaumburg Specialties team was only too happy to assist – and got the project up and running right away.
The Solution
Our expert team of design engineers and metal fabricators put their heads together and came up with a tailormade solution for Aramark in double quick time.
The stainless steel racks we built for Aramark
We built 20 sturdy, durable, 20-pan capacity stainless steel racks that would make maneuvering plated food from its commissary location to American Airlines’ packing warehouse a breeze.
The pan latch kept the product in place
To prevent plates of food moving around on the rack, we built a custom swivel latch pan stop, which when locked into place, would stop any pans or dishes from exiting the rack and ensure the safety and security of Aramark’s product.
The pan stop ensured the safety and security of food products
Meanwhile, heavy duty casters ensured the racks were effortlessly mobile and able to withstand rigorous use in the toughest conditions.
Casters ensured the racks ran smoothly
As soon as the stainless steel racks were ready, we shipped them to Phoenix, AZ so they could get to work at Aramark’s facility straight away.
We soon had feedback that the racks had integrated seamlessly into the company’s production line and the client was delighted with the results. He was also extremely happy that we had worked so hard to expedite his order – usually, our lead time would be approximately four to five weeks but we turned these racks around within three weeks!
Another day, another happy client for Schaumburg Specialties.
